PLUNGER & BARREL

In the case of friction of the sliding surfaces, corrosion of the cylinder cutoff holes and the cutting edges of the piston or corrosion due to acids, the sliding surfaces are cut- off and the whole of the cylindrical plunger & barrel must be replaced.

 GMD has developed the Plunger & Barrel remanufacturing service since 1979 through reverse engineering, advanced materials analysis techniques and ultra-modern multi axis CNC machines, which keeps us constantly uplifting. After a very detailed visual and dimensional inspection of the barrel arrangement, a report is sent to the customer about the condition of the fuel element and the option to proceed with the remanufacturing. The “Plunger & Barrel remanufacturing service” includes fine grinding to restore cylindricity and to build a slightly oversized plunger as the original.

 Our overhauling process includes:

• Dismantling, Chemical Cleaning, Inspection, Sand Blasting.
• Grinding and lapping of the surfaces points.
• Honing of the barrel to eliminate ovality errors and restore surface roughness for correct functioning of plunger & barrel assembly
• Manufacturing of new oversized plunger, using raw materials of high cleanliness from well-established vendors
• Heat treatment of plunger to improve mechanical properties.
• Plungers stabilizing with additional special heat treatment process.
• Grinding of new plunger, lapping and polishing to tolerances according to makers standards.
• Replacement of elastic O-rings and the sealing rings of plunger & barrel.
• Testing performance.

 GMD has exclusive solution for low sulfur fuel problems, in collaboration with well-renamed subcontractors.

 Low sulfur fuels cause bad lubrication in service for plungers, in modern Marine Diesel Engines. Result is sticking and seizure of plungers. For further information of how to deal with this arising problem, do not hesitate to contact us
